The blue colouring of this jacket is dyed through a process that uses less water
Working towards more environmentally-friendly dyes
Our teams work on finding innovative processes that reduce the use or pollution of water during manufacturing. The “dope dyeing” technique (mass dyeing) saves up to 60% water and significantly reduces CO² emissions. As such, it allows for a more sustainable clothes dyeing.
For this jacket, we began this process on the main fabric in navy blue and on the khaki lining, with other colours to follow using this technique.
A score for comparing products' environmental impact
On a scale of A to E, this jacket obtained a score of B.
The environmental impacts of our products are calculated over their entire life cycle. A score is given to each product so that you can easily identify the more eco-friendly products within a particular family (T-shirts, trousers, backpacks).
Decathlon is a voluntary supporter of this environmentally-friendly labelling approach.
Complete pocket system
The jacket has seven pockets in total! Two side pockets for warming your hands. Two large external bellows pockets with a flap and press stud closure. One outer chest pocket and one inside pocket with zip closing to secure your personal belongings. One inner mesh pocket, to keep your gloves for example, and keep them warm against your body!
Waterproofing of the garment
The garment passed a shower test under 60 litres of water/sqm/hour for two hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a rain shower. The fabric of this jacket is water repellent, i.e. water runs off its surface without getting absorbed. This prevents the fabric from soaking up water and keeps it lightweight and breathable. The water repellent property is achieved by treating the fabric's exterior. What's more, all the seams are taped.
How to maintain the waterproof property of your jacket over time
In order to maintain good waterproofing over time, the fabric's water-repellent properties must be restored regularly. We recommend doing this every three washes or after a dozen uses in the rain. The waterproof property is easily reactivated by warming the fabric: either in your tumble dryer or with a hair dryer, for example, over a relatively short period. If you are washing it, it must be thoroughly rinsed.
Waterproof rating expressed in mm or schmerber
We measure a fabric's resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm can therefore withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm water column.
The height of the hood can be adjusted using a drawstring. Its depth can be adjusted using a Velcro strip located at the back of the hood. The hood has a shape-memory visor that provides good protection for your face.
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we measure its thermal evaporative resistance coefficient (RET) based on the ISO 11092 standard. The lower the fabric's resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity can escape, and the higher the fabric's breathability.
- RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
- 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric
- 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric
- RET > 20 = little or no breathability
How to choose your waterproof jacket according to your activity and your sporting effort?
During sports activity, the extent to which we perspire depends on the intensity/duration of the physical effort. If the breathability of the fabric is not adapted to your type of physical activity, the perspiration vapour condenses inside the jacket. You feel damp inside: this is not rain coming through, but perspiration vapour condensing. You therefore need to choose a rain jacket according to your type of physical activity. This jacket is designed for 2h hiking at a max. speed of 5 km/h.
The lining of the jacket is composed of two materials: mesh in the back for superior breathability and nylon at the hips for freedom of movement and resistance to abrasion. On the hood, we added a peach skin fabric that is soft to the touch for more comfort.
Our hiking jackets and waterproofs are guaranteed for 2 years.
